It’s time to ‘spring clean’ your legal life
So many of us have minor legal issues that we never get round to sorting out. Get them tidied up and you can rest easier. Let’s find out more.
Spring is here. The days are getting longer and feeling warmer. It’s also that time of year when we do a spring clean, get rid of things we no longer want, and make space for the new and exciting.
If you’ve got some unresolved legal matters at the back of your mind, spring is an excellent time of year to get them sorted. Plus, with 30-minutes of free legal consultation available at Couchman Hanson, we can point you in the right direction.
In this article, we’ll look at three legal areas that might need a spring clean. We’ll also show you where to start. Let’s go.
1 – Your Will and LPA
If you haven’t made your Will yet, now’s the time to do it. While it’s not nice to think about, you never know what’s around the corner. It doesn’t matter how old you are; it’s great to have a Will in place so you can rest assured your loved ones will be looked after should the worst happen. Plus, even if you have made a Will, you should regularly revisit it to ensure it’s all up-to-date.
As well as your Will, it’s also a good idea to create your Lasting Power of Attorney provisions. LPAs allow you to choose someone who can make your legal, financial and medical decisions if you lose the mental capacity to make those decisions yourself.
Why leave it to chance? Having a Will and LPA in place means you can rest easy knowing everything is taken care of.
2 – Your property
Some people may have outstanding legal issues regarding their property.
For example, if you own a property by yourself but have recently got married, you may want to put your property into joint names. We frequently put these issues on the back burner because they don’t feel like a priority, but it’s always worth getting them sorted out.
Fortunately, matters like these are quick and easy to fix. You just need to get started.
3 – Your business
If you run a company, there could be many legal issues you’re ignoring because you’re busy with all the other stuff you have to do. Here are some of them:
● Chasing up unpaid debts
● Updating existing business contracts which may be out of date
● Putting a Lasting Power of Attorney in place for your business – someone to take over the day-to-day running of the company if you couldn’t do it for any reason
● having contracts of employment reviewed and updated
Time to talk to a solicitor
For all these matters, you need a solicitor. But if you’ve never had to use a solicitor before, where do you start finding one?
You want a solicitor that’s easy to get in touch with, but you also want them to be professional with the right kind of gravitas that you’d expect. You want the process to be as transparent and straightforward as possible, with minimal legal jargon and no hidden charges.
Finding the right solicitor for you
One way to start is to go on Google and search for solicitors in your area. There’s a great site called ReviewSolicitors that’s like TripAdvisor for solicitors. Customers (happy or dissatisfied) leave reviews of their experience to help you choose who to go with.
Currently, Couchman Hanson has 54 client reviews on ReviewSolicitors with an average rating of 5 out of 5. Here are some of the great things our customers have said about us:
‘I was incredibly impressed by the expertise I received. Highly attentive, professional, understanding, and committed to achieving the desired outcome. I would recommend to others in a heartbeat.’
‘Great service all the way from the initial telephone enquiry to the free 30-minute meeting.
Louise the Paralegal was amazing on the telephone enquiry, and Nikki the Solicitor was really great at the meeting, offering compassionate, informative, professional advice.’
‘During our recent house purchase, Helen was indispensable in helping to calmly and professionally help at all stages of our purchase and sale. She was proactive and responsive and made the process speedy and efficient for us. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her conveyancing services.’
